Jon Bishop Interview
Interview by Dj Todd Pelio
September, 2002 for Recordheadz.com
Who or what inspired
you in becoming a Dj/Producer?
I was inspired in the late 80's to try DJing from going
to clubs and watching the DJs there. I figured with my music
background and love for dance music, I could do it as well
as those guys. So I bought some turntables and a cheap-ass
radio shack mixer and went at it. A friend named Phil Frias
who DJed at one of the big clubs in town kind of showed
me the basics. As far as producing, I was inspired by Hardfloor
and Tony De Vit in the early years....
What is your favorite venue to play in the world?
Favorite venues are Club Hedonism in San Diego, Club 8150
in Vail, Colorado, and Sundissential and Tidy Weekenders
in the U.K.
When is the new release
coming out?
My new release on Tidy Trax called "Stalker" is
out now on limited white label promo and a full release
in October.
What artists are involved?
There are mixes by Ingo from the U.K. and the Hoodlums from
L.A. Also the original that Paul Maddox and I wrote in the
Tidy Trax studio in Sheffield, England
What is your favorite instrument in the studio?
Samplers are my favorite instrument. That's the basis of
a lot of our music.
Will you be coming to
Boston soon?
No bookings in the Boston area in the near future. I don't
think they're to into Hard House....
Is there a website or
some way for your fans to reach you?
I can be reached at icumedia.com, which is my management
in Los Angeles.
What is your opinion on
cd DJs, Do you play cd's?
I play quite a bit of my set on cd. I use the Pioneer CDJ100
as it fits in my suitcase and goes on the road with me.
Most of the music I play on cd is stuff that's not out yet.
What was you strangest
moment Djing?
Some of the strangest times DJing was the early days when
we were always getting chased by the cops for setting up
in illegal locations. That was almost a weekly occurrence.
What is the biggest difference
between the scene here in the states as
opposed to over in Europe, especially the UK?
The biggest difference in the U,K. to the U.S. is that they
are really into the music and DJs. It's a way of life for
most clubbers who follow DJs and club nights all over the
country. Very intense over there!..
What artist would you like
to work with in the future?
I would really like to work with the Hoodlum DJs in L.A.
We've talked about doing tracks together but haven't set
up the time yet. Hopefully soon though.
